A little while back there was a a GAF meeting to discuss sustainability for allotments, in particular the sustainability award that GAF are going to to be launching next year. Far from being all about saving the planet, reduce, recycle, re-use etc. The awards touch on many more important aspects of allotments, which is will they be there next year or the year after! As has been seen its all to easy for allotments to be lost for various reasons.
Janet MacDonald whom introduced the sustainability awards summarised the awards as being about 3 things
Earth Care - the plot / allotment site
People Care - the plotholders
Fair Share - the local community
Many people where surprised just how much they where doing already, that could count towards the sustainability award. In particular the newer allotment sites, thought it was just conserving water, recycling etc. Not realising just how much they where doing at this moment which contribute to achieving the award.
The presentation from the meeting can be found
here. There was a short brain storming session which some ideas of what could kind of actions could be taken, they are noted in the forum. If you wish to add to them please go to the forum and add you thoughts and / or ideas.
