There has been for some time now discussion regarding keeping of Bees on allotments in Glasgow.  Well finally some progress.

The following information was recieved by GAF from Cllr Martha Wardrop

MESSAGE SENT ON BEHALF OF GEORGE GILLESPIE, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, LAND AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

"I refer to your undernoted e-mail regarding the above matter and, following recent meetings with Land and Environmental Services officers, representatives of the Scottish Beekeepers Association and Glasgow and District Beekeepers Association, it was agreed that locations at Bellahouston Park and Provanhall House would be suitable for setting up the pilot project.  The pilot project will commence in the spring of 2012.  Allotment associations who have expressed an interest in beekeeping will be invited to attend scheduled Basic Beemaster training sessions at these locations.

On the successful completion of the pilot project, we would hope that those allotment associations who attended will have reached a level of competency to allow them to begin locating bee hives on their sites in the spring of 2013.  It is our intention that, where there is suitable space, bee hives would be sited on communal spaces rather than individual plots.  To comply with allotment rules, no individual plotholder would be permitted to sell honey or beeswax.  However, these items could be offered at open days etc, to help raise funds for the allotment association.

Any allotment association that wishes to register for the Basic Beemaster training sessions should contact Robert, Watson, Allotments Officer, Land and Environmental Services, Glasgow City Council, 37 High Street, Glasgow G1 1LX, telephone: 0141 287 0221, email: robert.watson@glasgow.gov.uk."
